How do you make a quick website with no design experience

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

So you are sitting there and thinking that you want to design a website but you are not a web designer.  Well I am here to tell you that there are some really nifty sites out there that can help you get a website up in a matter of minutes all you have to supply is the content and some pictures if you want.  Some of them can be kinda of buggy at times but the designs are nice if you are just trying to get something up and out there in a couple of hours.  Here is a list of the best ones I know out there, if you know of another one let me know:

  1. www.zEZweb.com This one is nice if you are wanting to do a sales letter format.  Very simple to follow and designed by internet marketers that do sales letters for a living or at least a lot.
  2. www.blinkweb.com This one has some nice designs.  I found some parts a little buggy but i haven’t used it in a while so it might be better by now.
  3. www.weebly.com : This is very nice one of my favorites for throwing up something quickly.
  4. www.synthasite.com: Honestly can’t remember using them but it is worth checking out.
  5. www.edicy.com:  Never tried saw it and decided to bookmark it.

This should give you an idea of where you can go to do some simple web design for your site.  Let me know if you find some more.

The Power of Using A Reader

Friday, January 30th, 2009

So you have maybe heard of a reader and are wondering what it is all about.  Well let me tell you, they are awesome.  The idea behind a reader is that you subscibe to a blog (by clicking the RSS Button ( the orange thing in the corner of the URL bar).  What this will do is give you an option to use it with a reader or use it on your homepage of Google.  This is assuming you have a google account of course, sorry about that I forgot that part.  Anyhow if you choose add to reader it will post it in the reader and get all the updates from that site when ever one is posted.   I love this feature.  My parents might have a morning newspaper and coffee but I have my morning reader and pepsi.  Maybe pepsi is the wave of a whole new generation.  I am able to keep up with all my favorite blogs about the industries I am following and see what is new and exciting in the field at all times.  No more going to check other sites on the internet to see what they said if anything at all.  It is all right there.  Of course I am following all kinds of SEO Tips, Internet Marketing Gurus and anything to do with Local Search Engine Optimization.  It may be different for you.  You might want to follow your favorite sports team news or favorite pop star.  All I am trying to tell you is that this is a great tool that you can use to your advantage.  If you feel like curious George ask me how I market on Craigslist using a reader.  It will floor you.  I will be making an official product for this soon that i will be giving to my loyal readerbase.  So mom I have a present for you and you too Martin whoever you are.

Do you need SEO when designing your website?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This is a big fat yes!  A lot of companies think that these are two totally different concepts and I really feel for them when they come to us.  I mean there is stuff that we can do to help them in terms of off page optimization tactics, but on-page we have to adjust stuff.  Recently I had a company come to me and their entire site was done in all images not a single word was text.  They were wondering why they weren’t ranking for anything in the search engines.  I had to explain to them that the bots don’t even bother to read their websites.  When doing website design it is vital that you consult with an Orlando SEO firm as well.  Or at least try to see if the website designer is competent in SEO.  Now some will say that they are and believe me they might not be good at it at all.  If you are ever questioning if the company you are hiring is any good at doing SEO, drop me a line and I will go over the site and their portfolio to see if they walk the talk.

But bottomline website design and seo services go hand and hand.  They are like peanut butter and jelly or peas and carrots or mash and potatos…wait.  I would love to hear your opinion on the subject drop me a line with your opinion.  Hope to hear from you soon.

What Does SEO Stand For?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Now to some this might seem trivial and you can go ahead and go about your day.  But to others this might be important.  Actually I know it is there are thousands of people searching for this exact same phrase monthly.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  Which basically means: it is the process of getting your website ranked higher in the search engines for certain keywords pertaining to your business.  So for example an company that does pressure washing in Boston might want to rank for the keywords: Boston pressure washer, Boston pressure washing company or pressure washing Boston.  Now I can’t really go into all the details of how you do that, but there are sites that plenty of information about this.  If you are wondering about this process and are just now understanding the term, then I would suggest getting in contact with someone that knows internet marketing and seo or search engine optimization.  Just to let you know, not only do I know what the term means I also know how to do it for your business.  Drop us a line if you are curious about our work we have done and if we walk the talk.  Heck I was trying to rank for this term and you found this article didn’t you.

Should You Outsource Your Articles

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

So you are at the point where you are not wanting to write all of your own unique content everyday.  You might have things to do.  So you have heard of those sites like Guru.com or Elance.com and want to give them a try.  All i got to say is good luck and be careful.  There are a great number of people on these sites that you can deal with that do excellent jobs and stand up to their work.  But then again there are a number of ones that are like that Steve Miller Song “take the money and run”.  The best thing to do is try to develop relationships with people that do some work for you and then try a couple different people.  Use them for small stuff and see how they respond to your questions and how long it takes them.

Because a lot of them are in India it usually takes a day till they get back to you.  Or if you are up at night real late you can usually get them then.  I would suggest using them for some stuff but articles can be a subject that you might want to try a different country for.  Malaysia is a good country for this.  Because their first language is English and they actually studied better than I do’ed.  So the articles actually come back in pretty good grammer and informative.

However the only thing that I would say that I don’t like is sometimes the idioms they use are not what I would say.  Which is fine for some of the stuff but when you develop a reputation people will begin to understand your writing style and know when you wrote something or had it outsourced.

It is little things too like in American English for a lot of words (I can’t think of one right now) but I have seen them we use “z” as where the British use “s” instead.  Little stuff like that not a big deal, but your regular readers will notice it.

So bottom line don’t use the articles for your primary blog, keep that to yourself.  You can publish for further dates.  So sit down with a nice glass of tea and drill out 10 articles and then go stick your hands in some ice cause they will need it.  And leave the places you are just trying to get the backlinks and such from to the outsourced.

Write Newsletters or Blog Posts

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

So you are debatting on writing a newsletter or just updating your blog.  Well there are some factors that go into each aspect of both.  Newletters actually require you to have someone to send that newsletter to.  So this is usually a step that you are implementing while you update your blog.  You might have an autoresponder in the right hand corner prompting people to sign up for your newsletter.  Newletters come in two types: email and standard mail.  Now the goal of having a newsletter is to brand yourself as an authority figure in your industry.  This will happen too over time.

Now the question is what shoud you include in your newsletter?  I usually suggest things that you don’t include in your blog.  Anybody can stop by and read your blog, so why give them the same quality of information that you give your newsletter readers.  I mean if that was the case your newsletter readers might unsubscribe from you and just not pay attention because they think you are just using this as a marketing avenue that you can use down the road.  Which isn’t a false statement.  I mean honestly would you give away everything you know and expect nothing back?  If so lets do lunch, but otherwise you will market to them eventually.  You have to develop the trust factor and credibility factor before you go about doing this.

So the next question is email or actual paper in the mail? I am a firm believer in, if you can afford to send it by mail then do that.  I don’t know about you but I get thousands of emails.  I don’t read everyone or I wouldn’t even be able to write this post.  But you better believe when I get my newsletter in the mail from my favorite internet marketers I jump around like it is Christmas.  You cant beat an actual thing you can write on, take with you when you are waiting in line some where or just sit out under a tree and read it.  Computers haven’t got to that point yet, they are getting close with the readers.

So if you want your clients full attention then send it out on paper.  If you don’t believe me let me ask you a question.  How many magazines do you have sitting around that you refuse to throw out because of the good content?  And, how many emails do you have that you read often and keep because they are just so easy to remember where they are at?  You get me.  I walk in my office there is a newsletter on my desk.  If that same one was in my inbox in a folder I honestly would forget about.

Let me know your thoughts.

How often should you update your blog?

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

What exactly are your goals of your blog? This should be the first question that comes to mind.  If you are doing it for your family or something that your children can read when they are older then post when you have news.  But if you are after trying to get readership and good search engine rankings then you need to post regularly.  So what is regularly?  This is the gray area.  The important thing to look at is your industry specifically.  If you are in the local internet marketing or local seo market like us, then I would say stop posting and just call it quits.  Just forward your domain to our site.  Just kidding.

But for example if you are in say the Ostrich egg industry and you know all of your competitors, then take a look at their site.  How often are they posting? Do they have a blog?  You want to keep up with your industry, is what I am getting at.  But you also want to say something usefull and interesting.  Nobody wants to read about stuff that they already know or what you did that day.  Well actually scratch that there is that site called twitter.  Some people do some weird stuff.

So bottom line here is that you need to update your site often and more often then your competition.  But your content has to be envoking and you want it to rank for something that you do.  I seem to post every 2 days.  But that is because I don’t have a life.  So please send me a comment and tell me your thoughts on the subject.  I love to learn from people.

Blog Vs A Static Site and Why

Friday, January 16th, 2009

So you finally figured out how to make a website and learned what ftp stands for.  Good for you.  If you plan on making a website that is for you and your own vanity or to put photos or something up that doesn’t need to get good rankings in the search engines then a static site is fine.  Have fun in the sandbox.  Now don’t get me wrong we have plenty of static sites, so does this site it has a blog as well.

The way it works is a bot will crawl your site and see that you have new content and make note of it and that counts for something, because I heard someone say that google likes “new content” or something like that. I don’t know I wasn’t listening.

But the advantage of having a blog is that when your content is updated you can let the search engines know that it is updated RIGHT THEN.  By Pinging them.  Pinging is not only good for getting a bot to come crawl your site but it also gives information to all the blog aggregators.  These sites are always getting crawled they are SO busy.  Not only that but if someone is using RSS to follow your posts and or website they will be able to get an update to their reader IF you have a blog formatted site.

Nowadays there are blogs that look like websites.  Which is neat and I think a little sneaky but I like the way they work.  These are basically websites built from a wordpress base.  Still give you the look and the functionality of a blog.

So to answer the question is a Blog better than a static website, the answer is yes.  Usability, SE Friendlier, Readability is better.

Drop me a line, say something even if it is to say hello

Is the Day of Directories Worthless?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Yes, end of post.

Just kidding.  Well you have to look at what a directory is, it is basically a place where you can put a lot of links in hope of getting a nice page ranked site linking back to you.  Well a lot of directories don’t except affiliate sites, so if you are submitting an affiliate site for your best “mystery shopper review” good luck.

Just this last year Google pretty much denounced directories of having any relevancy at all.  They didn’t say it in those exact words, but if you can think for yourself then that is what they were getting at.  This doesn’t bother me a bit.  A lot of directories are ugly, old and not fun to deal with.  Especially DMOZ, the Godfather of Directories.  Their process of choosing who to put in their directory is as difficult to figure out as the process as deciphering an ancient dead language.

So if directories are dead, I don’t think I will cry tonight.  I actually hope that DMOZ will start asking me to give them sites to include in their directory because nobody pays attention to them anymore. I will do what they have done to me for the last 5 years.  Ignore them  and tell them to try again.

Let me know what you think, do you agree or not agree.

Where are some places to get links from?

Monday, January 12th, 2009

So we all know that it is all about the link juice and getting it flowing to your site.  Sometimes it is hard to think of different avenues to post a link to your site from.  I of course use all the usual places.  But there are some new ones that are starting to catch my attention and I was wondering if anyone else is seeing this and having results.

First place I find really interesting is inside blogger profile.  There is a place where you can list blogs that you follow.  Here you can list down all of your blogs that you “follow” or you can just list the blogs you don’t have to follow because you wrote them, it’s up to you.  But a nice little trick I think deserves some thought.

Second place is of course twitter.  I don’t know if I have to go into for sake of sounding like another person talking about the power of twitter, but it seems that it is just a fact and a way to get picked up really quickly.

There are a number of other great ideas and would love to share them all with you but then they wouldn’t be great places to get links from.  What I suggest you doing is getting the SEO Firefox add-on and just keep it on a lot.  You will get used to it.  Then as you go about your daily regularly you will land on sites that don’t have the nofollow tags.  Then just make a note of that site and see if there is a way to get links there.  There are more out there than you know of.  Then after that make a folder in your bookmarks and just when you need to start adding links to webpages or blogs utilize one of the options that you have collected.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this post and if you want to trade ideas of places.  Drop me a comment, I love chatter.
